AI Overviews are AI summaries Google shows for selected queries. They can include links to web sources and offer a path to more detailed information.
What are AI Overviews?
Google uses generative AI to put together an overview of the answer and picks related links. The summary doesn't always appear, and its form can change with the query, country, device and other circumstances.
Who AI Overviews cite
Google doesn't publish how exactly it selects sources. Its official guidance is the same as for regular SEO: the page has to be accessible, indexed, clear and useful.
You don't need a special AI schema or a text file. Structured data should match the visible content and use supported types.
What to do about it
Watch changes in impressions, clicks and CTR in Google Search Console. For queries that lose clicks, strengthen the content people need to visit your site for: data, a tool, a comparison or a service.
A citation can bring brand visibility, but it isn't guaranteed. I treat AI Overviews as part of AI SEO. They don't replace technical and content SEO.
