AEO is optimizing content for systems that assemble a direct answer for the user. AI Overviews belong here, and so do conversational assistants and some voice answers.
What is AEO?
AEO helps a machine find a suitable passage, understand it and possibly use it. It won't force a citation. Each system decides on its own which answer and which sources it shows.
AEO vs. SEO: is it a new discipline?
I see AEO as an extended goal of SEO, and I wouldn't call it a separate field. Technical accessibility, relevance, authorship, internal links and reputation are the shared foundation.
What's new is mostly measurement. Next to rankings and clicks, you track whether a system mentions the brand, links to it and describes it correctly.
How to write content for answer engines
- Answer directly in the first sentence of a section.
- Explain one idea in one continuous passage.
- Add conditions, exceptions and your own experience.
- Back verifiable claims with a solid source.
- Keep names and facts consistent across the site.
The same rules make the page easier to read for people. A clear answer is useful even when no AI system ever cites it.
